Vehicle Recovery
& Winch-Outs.

In a ditch, in a snowbank, or halfway down a soft shoulder. This is the job that needs a winch and someone who has done it before.

Getting a vehicle out is not the same as towing it

A recovery is a different job from a tow. The vehicle is somewhere it was never meant to be, often at an angle, sometimes in mud or snow, occasionally with a slope and traffic to think about. Doing it wrong bends body panels, tears bumpers off, and can put the truck in the ditch alongside you.

That is why we ask a lot of questions on the phone. How far off the road, which way it is facing, what is underneath it, is anything holding it up. The answers decide what equipment comes.

What we recover

  • Cars and trucks that slid off in snow or ice, which around here is most of December through March
  • Vehicles in ditches, on soft shoulders, and in the mud on seasonal roads
  • Accident vehicles that need to be uprighted or dragged clear before they can be loaded
  • Vehicles stuck on a lawn, a field, a boat launch or a driveway that turned to mud

Winter in the North Country

Between Lake George, Warrensburg and the hill roads around Queensbury, we spend a good part of the winter pulling people out of snowbanks. If you have slid off and the car is still upright and not blocking traffic, stay in it with your belt on and your hazards on. Standing next to the road in a snowstorm is genuinely the most dangerous part of the whole situation.

Then what

Once the vehicle is back on solid ground, it either drives away or it does not. If something got damaged on the way in, we can tow it to a shop from there without a second call.

Common questions

Do you do winch-outs in snow?

Constantly, all winter. It is one of the most common calls we get from December through March.

Will the recovery damage my vehicle?

Done properly, using the right recovery points and the right angle, it should not. Done with a chain around whatever looked strong, it can. That is the whole argument for calling someone with the equipment.

What if my car is on its side or roof?

Tell us that immediately when you call. It changes what we bring and how we approach it, and if anyone is still inside, call 911 first.
